Ever since social media exposed us to more of what is going on around the world, and in the creative industry in particular, boudoir Photography has been growing in popularity. But what exactly is boudoir photography? In this blog post, I’ll be sharing what it is to me and why every woman needs a boudoir photography experience!
A quick Google search will tell you that a boudoir is a woman’s dressing room, bedroom, or private sitting room. In it’s simplest form, boudoir photography is intimately photographing a woman in a bedroom setting. However, this doesn’t really do justice to what boudoir photography is really all about. Boudoir Photography is SO much more than just photographs!
It’s about self-acceptance, bravery, body positivity and taking charge. It is about getting glammed up and laughing your butt off! It’s about the transformation that takes place between the time you walk into my studio and walk back out. It is about feeling beautiful and that’s something I believe every person deserves to experience. It’s all about celebrating you!
I started shooting boudoir because I saw the beauty in everyone and believe I could show any person what I see through my camera. Women tell me they feel they can’t look “that beautiful” because they feel too tall, weigh too much or have too many stretch marks. I love showing them the photos from their shoot and showing them that they CAN! Seeing their reactions to their pictures inspired me and I knew that I had found my passion.
It is now my job to be a mirror for my clients. Not the mirror that the world shows you that shames you, but the one that sees past all of the lumps, bruises and imperfections.
I want every single woman to feel beautiful, no matter what. If you’ve gained weight, if you’ve lost weight, if you have 3 kids, if you’ve just experienced a breakup or divorce, if you just got married, if you just want to celebrate you, you deserve to feel beautiful no matter who you are and what you’ve been through.
Boudoir photography also doesn’t have to mean lingerie. There are so many options for what to wear and it ranges depending on your style. Boudoir is more about the experience and the journey you go through, than about what you wear. You can feel just as sexy and beautiful in an oversize T-shirt and knee-high wool socks, as you can feel in a corset with heels on!
A great first step is to figure out your style by picking 3 words that you’d like to describe your boudoir experience. For example, if the words fun, playful, and flirty are the first that come to mind, then you can choose pieces of clothing that represent that.
To me, boudoir photography is about empowering women. The power that a photograph has is often overlooked; and it can change lives. There is nothing as amazing as seeing a woman who has been self-conscious their entire lives get a boudoir photoshoot done and turn into the best version of themselves. There aren’t many jobs where you can witness someone changing right in front of your eyes. I have the best job in the world!
The media is forcing us to feel bad about ourselves everyday, whether we realize it or not. Our mothers, sisters and daughters are growing up watching us tear each other down. How do we stop this? This is why boudoir photography is so important. Every woman needs a boudoir experience because every woman deserves to feel amazing in their own skin, exactly how they are right now.
Boudoir photography is for any shape, size, colour, and age. There is no perfect body. YOU are your perfect body.
